What Another Oklahoma Man Has Done.

Four years ago last spring, Leroy HUGHES then 61 yers old and with a wife and five small children, came to a point near the present post office of Loewen, about 9 miles south of Shattuck. His worldly possessions consisted of 3 horses, 2 cows, a sparse outfit of farming implements, a tent, and $30.00. His principal stock in traid(sic), however, was a strong heart and a determined will, and undaunted by the prospect of hard labor and privation, he went to work to open a farm in the virgin soil. He went through the usual hardships attending, and tomake a long story short, he has provided for his family during these four years and brought his his(sic) land up to a state of cultivation where it was possible for him to show the following as the results of his labor:

This year he harvested something over 800 bushels of wheat for which he received 86 cents per pushel, or $688.00; 118 b. of barley worth 50 cents per bu.; 22 bales of broomcorn for which he received $150.00; threshed 290 bu. of kaffir corn from 10 acres of ground and from which he had fed 6 head of horses all fall before threshing; had 14 acres of Indian corn from which he fattened 9 head of hogs and then shelled 202 bushels of corn; threshed 74 bushels of broom corn seed, worth 50 cents per bushel; cut 14 tons of cane hay worth $5.00 per ton; sold $35.00 worth of hogs and $35.00 worth of melons. Summing it all up, he has derived a profit of at the lowest estimate of $1074.25 from this years crops. He now has 7 head of cattle, having sold several previouuusly and 6 head of horses and mules, and has built a barn costing $250.00. He has 114 acres of his farm in cultivation this year. How is this for a man now 65 years old.
